February through June. This sweet tropical has a flavor similar to maple sugar. It has a honey-blond to reddish flesh and thin, brown leathery skin. The thin black seeds must be removed for eating. Eaten out of hand or in fruit salads and drinks. Originally, the 'chicle' or sap of the sapodilla was boiled down to make chewing gum. STORAGE: Ripen at room temperature until soft then refrigerate. DISPLAY: Display with other sub-tropical or specialty fruits. NUTRITION: Low in calories, Sapodillas are high in potassium and Vitamin C and are a good source of fiber. |
